sometimes my clutch pedal will be high (normal) sometimes it will have a little play, maybe an inch till resistance is felt, then stiff all the way through engaging and disengaging clutch, driving home a week back it went near enough to the floor, i limped it home and didnt use it for a day or two over xmas, next time i started it up i noticed it was still the same, checked the level and it was empty, i presumed a leak somewhere, maybe slave cylinder (wherever the hell that is (help me guys)), so i topped it up and it has been fine since with the odd bit of play now an then, then i came from work today and it was playing up again, had about an inch before it bit (from the floor) pulled up at some lights and held it on the clutch, it sorted itself out as if some air had been eradicated and is now as good as new???? obviously air can get trapped in the hydraulic pipes, but how do i sort the whole thing out, changed slave cylinders on other cars ive had and they aint that bad, but never a front engine rear drive car, when they have gone before they go in a big way with either a puff of smoke in the rear view mirror from boiling fluid (my mr2) or just stick in the gear you are in and you cant pull it out or change gear, any help guys, anyone had this kinda thing before, is a slave cylinder an imminent disaster!!?? i am mobile enough to jack the car up and have a look for leaks too but as its fekkin dark all the time and wet, finding a leak may be pretty hard??! i may be 32 but i can still walk |

It could be the slave cylinder (on the side of the gearbox n/s) or it could be the one off the pedal, but it will be sods law its not the one you change!!! :grrr: |

If its loosing clutch fluid then its either the master cylinder( pedal ) ,the slave cylinder ( gearbox ) or the pipe between the two. If you got a wet carpet just below the pedal then its fluid leaking from the master cylinder or the the blue pipe from the resevior is leaking ( quite common). If there is fluid leaking from the bottom of the gearbox bellhousing then your slave has gone. If one or the other is on the way out then the exsisting fluid in the resevior can appear very dark. cheers guys, waiting for a dry day now, but that aint gonna happen, can look at my carpet but its always wet cos my feet are there :surrender: but there would be a smell of the fluid inside the car wouldnt there, so im bettin its the gearbox bit, i will have a look sunday i guess, it keeps on being fine then acting as if it has a bubble or two of air and loses an inch of travel for a few secs then is ok the next, i used to cable clutches what with havin fords in the past :hammer: if the fluid had got low enough for it to pull air in then i just gotta get the air out i guess? it got low enough so there wasnt any left in reso? but as i posted in the other post, i have a crack in the reso cap :grrr: so have gaffered it up air tight till i get another, there arent any flippin e30's in yards round here though!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cheers for the help, this place is ace!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ps, every day im on here i wanna keep mine or get an IS when my redundancy comes through, god damn it!!! :woohoo: |

Don't gaffa the lid up air tight, If you do then put a pin prick hole in it. As fluid goes down air must get in. The cap has a small hole in it. john |

ive always been advised to do both the master and slave at the same time if replacing one as one working more efficiently than the other will place extra stress on the old one causing it to fail soon after, dont know if thats true or not but its easy to replace both at the same time anyway, and relatively cheap as both cost about £30 each from ecp. |

done my slave cylinder, thank god, was gettin quite annoying at having to take it out of gear etc when manouvering just in case it fooked off when the pressure bled out :grrr: one nut was really easy 13mm socket and 1/2 inch rachet, the other was a combination of every 1/2 inch extension i own, a swivel and a 13mm plug socket, got it done though, no probs, bled it and its ready to go :woohoo:
