My Cousin's Husband is a really high up mechanic in BMW, (only 12 people in the world at his level apparently ) He was telling me that the E36's from the first 3/4 years were crap, rattly engines, loads of probs. I must admit, i've considered buying an E36 2dr in the past, as i quite like the look of them. |

Thats just what i heard as well, they were a bit of a let down compared to the e-30 in build quality but you can pick a later year one up for a steal. I like them as well. Mart. |

I think that the e36 was better in some ways, 24valve twin cam engines, better steering etc but for me they just never looked like a nice car, over the years the e34 and the e46 were cars that grew on me after I had initially hated them, but the e36? No still hate the look of them. I suppose that it wasn’t helped by the fact that it followed two of the best looking cars (IMHO), the e30 & the e21. Function following form I suppose. The other way of looking at them is that they can make good transplant cars for your e30, take the good bits leave the rest. |

The compact has the same rear end as the E30 - trailing arms / diff. I had one for 3 years. A nice solid car compared to the Honda civic I had before. The 1.6 had enough torque so you could drive it on the motorway without needing to change down. It was quite an aright car. Not enough power, it's now my brothers car and we've sorted the power issue out ;) http://328compact.co.uk/ |

Pretty much the same with any car, really. Get the youngest of the model you can find/afford. The first two or three years of a model run, the manufacturers spend ironing-out real-world problems. Once that's all done and the necessary modifications are built into production cars, they're OK. Don't trust anyone who says "those all got sorted under warranty/recall". There are always a few cars that slip through that net for one reason or another. |

I don't like them that much either... They just look kinda bland imo and not too keen on the interior too since they are nice and big but actually have less space in them than an E30 to me... They also feel crap to drive. The bad ones feel totally unpredictable and iffy in the turns and the good ones just feel boring... The first one I drove was a MINT red M3 rep 318iS. It felt very solid but there was no sence of occasion like an e30 at all. I was doing 110 down a stretch and the only sence of speed was looking at the speedo. Drove a bad one then a friend was looking at soon after that. A chaved up 316 with hanging bushes. It was one of the worst cars I've ever driven and was kinda embarassed since I was always telling him Beemers were a great car and that one was the first he drove, lol. I do like some E36s though... The M3 obviously and also crashed E36s in scrappies E46s on the other hand are a totally different kettle of fish
