i think it is the E36 318is engine, which is a 1.9 mate.
Don't take my word for it though, i'm not 100%

I thought the handling would have been decent only being a shorter car?

From 1994 to `96 they had the M42B18 (1796 cc) engine (The IS one) and from 1996 to `98 it had the M44B19 (1896 cc) one. Still doesn’t matter what engine is in it, I think it was the ugliest BMW ever made, looked like a e36 that had been in a motorway pile up :)

Compacts are like this.

They first came out in 94, by then all the bugs were worked out. they got the newer suspension set up at the front which changed on e36s around mid ´91.

the rear end is from an e30, and the wheelbase and width is comparible to an e30 M3 geometry wise no lie !

build quality is better than the e30, as is the e46 over the e36 and so on.. its the truth , no point hiding

the engine sizes available are as follows

m43b16 - 1.6 8valve injec.
m43b19 - 1.6 8valve with different cam and throttle body giving .3 of a litre and 10hp

m42b18 - the trusty i.S poor mans s14 16 v madman 136hp
m44b18 - refined version of the m42, with 5 ft lbs torque more than the older version.. same HP though
m52b23 - the badboy of the line up, and when you think the car only weighs in at 1250kgs, 170hp is alot

then there was the diesel version 1.8tds, and a carb version much like the earlier M10 engine called the 316g and it only had about 85 hp..

ive had mine almost 3 years now, and all in all a good little car :)

- only in continental Europe though! You very occasionally seem them in the UK. The M52B28 and the M3 engines drop right in ;)

They handle just fine, but my E46 is defiantly a step forward.

The TI stands for Touring International and was last used on the 2002's

It’s just a personal opinion; I don’t like the look of them, never liked the look of the e36 and the compact is just that: a small e36. Oh well each to their own. I am sure there some people who think the e30 is ugly (but not around here obviously)
