Good question. the 316 and the 318i both use the M10 engine, and are compatible. Not sure about a 316i and a 318 What years are they? If they're pre-1984 then they'll likely both be M10 powered, as opposed to M40 in the later cars. Do you know what kind of engines they are? If they're both based on M10 blocks, the heads will be interchangeable. Also, I may be wrong on this, but someone else will know and confirm if I'm right. The M10 and M40 heads may also be interchangeable. BMW tend to stick with the same measurements when updating an engine, the six-cylinder M20 engine, for example, will, with minor modification, switch heads with the later M50 24v engine, and the M52, and the M54, and even the S52 race engine. The four-cylinder M10 engine is plug-and-play with the S14 race engine used in the M3, I'd be surprised if it doesn't mate with the M40 head too. Edited by Cloud, Tue 25 Aug 2009, 06:28:59.
